Creating an Investment Policy Statement (IPS) is our first step when determining client's tolerance of risk and evaluating the opportunities for return. The Investment Policy serves as a road map and is the single best method to set expectations. The Investment Policy will set out the nature of the interaction, the expectations of returns and tolerance for risk. It will delineate permitted and non permitted security types. We prefer to then supplement the Policy with more constraining guidelines tailored for specific manager assignments.

It has been well documented that the single largest determinant of a portfolio's return is its Asset Allocation. It will be the basis for determining the magnitude of success of a portfolio on achieving the stated goals. Goals should be characterized as strategic and be tactical in nature and should provide for opportunities in both. The allocation decisions are impacted uniquely to each client by tax, regulatory, funding levels, duration of the portfolio, legal, among other factors. USI has the resources to incorporate client spending, business needs, regulatory matters, and tax consequences to assist in determining the proper allocations and the correct implementation.

USI's consultant works directly with the research team to ensure that the client's unique needs are understood and only the most appropriate managers are included in the search. Consultants are able to guide the search and monitor each step of the process to ensure that the manager chosen understands their role in the portfolio and any regulatory needs or impact investing. USI has multiple manager databases available for screening on numerous parameters. We subscribe to multiple external manager databases for quantitative data and maintain the USI Manager Hub, an internal proprietary database of managers that track our notes, opinions, and due diligence on each manager. .

While often thought of as required but not an additive step, the performance measurement of a client includes both a quantitative and qualitative look into the managers' strategy for prior time periods. It is the check on the managers to see if they are compliant with the Policy, consistent with their strategy for which they were hired, consistent with the narrative for tactical moves and consistent across their client base which have similar expectations and benchmarks. Moreover, it is the single source to endure that when manager portfolios are aggregated, there are no unintended portfolio mis-alignments nor concentrations. A manager without limitation may migrate around growth/value/small/large etc. USI uses a variety of tools for portfolio evaluation and cross-references for consistency and accuracy.
